With the New Year already underway, the spirit of new beginnings is everywhere! If you’re one of the many homeowners with a remodel on your New Year’s resolutions, you may be wondering which remodeling trends will be all the rage, and which will fall swiftly out of fashion.
Well, we’ve read the reports for 2024, and we’re here to take you on a deep dive. Here are the trends here to stay and new trends on the rise, according to the industry experts at Kitchen and Bath Design News.
Trends Here to Stay in 2024:
1. Aging in Place Renovations
The first remodeling trend for 2024 is aging in place! (See: What is Aging in Place?) Designers are predicting that these projects will continue to trend this year due to the increased number of homeowners looking to keep their current house from their retirement into their golden years.
Plus, Northern NJ-based designer Sharon Sherman also identifies aging in place techniques as a smart remodeling choice for people of all ages! In an interview with Kitchen and Bath Design News, Sherman outlined how these features “are for weekend warriors, too. If you are an athlete, injury prevention and recovery are important details to integrate into all aspects of design.”
Designs for aging in place include installing grab bars for bathrooms, changing existing showers out for roll-in, curbless showers, and replacing low toilet seats for raised toilet seats.
Aging in place renovations are also a great way to accommodate families interested in multigenerational living. Having a grandparent stay long-term is made easy if one bathroom is redesigned to be a combination grandparents and kids’ bathroom, for example. Plus, in the short term, designing a guest bathroom to be fit for accessibility can make in-laws feel more welcome during their overnight visits as well.
2. Spa Bathroom Design
Spa elements such as steam showers and aromatherapy controls are also expected to remain popular this year. Homeowners love these features for the improved relaxation effects, and wellness benefits. For example, did you know that a steam shower can help with congestion relief, activating your circulation, and ease joint stiffness?
Additionally, steam, chromatherapy, and aromatherapy design elements all work together to provide homeowners with a bathroom that provides stress relief, just like a real spa!
3. Kitchens as an Entertaining Space
While in the past entertainment design has been all about couches and dining tables, designers are predicting that kitchens in 2024 will be recentered around the chef. This includes a continued emphasis on the kitchen island as the heart of the kitchen, now with ample seating to accommodate guests right nearby.
Kitchen islands themselves are also getting modern updates in 2024, including built-in stovetops and plenty of standard and USB outlets. Plus, new kitchen island countertops with wireless charging are a game changer for guests wanting to charge their phones!
4. Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Products
Designs that incorporate sustainability practices and eco-friendly products were popular last year, and are only going to grow in 2024. Previously, we highlighted tiles from the Abstra Collection from Kohler WasteLAB, which is made using nearly 100% recycled waste materials.
In terms of new sustainable tile, Daltile and their parent company are also joining the movement for sustainable production this year. In their report of ESG Accomplishments, Dal-Tile announced that now 99% of their tile collections contain reclaimed or recycled materials.
Plus, they’ve backed up this movement with their company-wide commitment to recycling and using recycled materials throughout their process, not just in the tile production line. With more manufacturers doubtless ready to follow Dal-Tile and Kohler’s lead, 2024 is sure to be another inspiring year of sustainability in design.
In the Interior Design world, recycled and repurposed materials are also slated to trend with reclaimed furniture in new interior designs. Plus, high-efficiency products like LED lights, water-saving fixtures, and energy-efficient windows will also be popular this year.
5. Trading Gas Stoves for Electric Stoves
2024 is also set to be a year of remodels centered around green technology! Thanks to incentives away from natural gas appliances, designers are anticipating a huge rise in homeowners replacing their gas ranges for electric counterparts this year.
This is partially due to recent government incentives for homeowners with natural gas appliances. As a part of 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act, the government set out to offer rebates for the purchase of new electric appliances, including ranges, cooktops, and even wall ovens.
The rebates are set to become available in California in 2024. Homeowners who qualify for the full rebate could save $840 on a new stove! If you’d like to learn more, Environment America has the full report.
6. Induction Cooking
Also trending and included in the upcoming rebates this year are induction stoves! Not only are they more energy-efficient than conventional electric stoves and three times more efficient than gas stoves, but they also have built-in safety features.
An induction burner will never get hot unless there’s a pot or a pan physically on the stove – even if you turn on the burner. Plus, another bonus is that the surface of an induction cooktop never gets as hot as a traditional electric range. This means your food will get heated more efficiently, and you have less risk of burning yourself.
Not to mention the improved speed of cooking – water boils over three times faster on an induction stove than on a gas stove. Just make sure that your pans are compatible with the electromagnetic heating system, and you’re good to go. It’s no wonder that induction stovetops are here to stay!
7. Outdoor Kitchens
This year, we’re expecting a renewed interest in outdoor kitchens. This trend comes in tandem with the continued rise of homeowners looking to live in their homes for longer. Rather than buying new spaces, homeowners will continue to customize their spaces and work to build something that feels truly their own.
So, what better way to feel like you’re getting the most out of your home than with a new outdoor kitchen? Outdoor kitchens are a great way to get the most out of your backyard, and more easily host guests and events at home. They’re also especially appealing for barbeque and grill masters looking to have a more advanced setup than a standalone grill.
New design trends for outdoor kitchens this year include the latest appliances like pizza ovens, grills, and outdoor wine coolers, plus sustainability efforts like building with reclaimed wood and metal.
8. The Butler’s Pantry
For added kitchen storage, one growing movement is to restructure your kitchen to include a walk-in pantry. These pantries are popular because of their ample storage space, especially in homes where the kitchen itself is a bit small.
Besides storing food, butler’s pantries can also help keep your counters clear. Instead of bulky appliances being kept out or concealed in trendier “appliance garages,” they can be kept in their own open shelves in the separate pantry. Plus, open shelving also allows you to see all your ingredients at once when you walk in, making inventory a breeze.
9. Steam Ovens
On the heels of air-fryers comes the latest wellness cooking appliance, the steam oven! According to Food Network, benefits of steam ovens include faster cook times, preserving foods’ vitamins and minerals, and cutting out the need to add oil in the cooking process. This is because in the traditional cooking process, cooks use oil to preserve the moisture of food while an oven heats it. However, because steam cooking provides a moist cooking environment inherently, you can enjoy the same dishes with far less added oils.
10. Energy Independence
Lastly, the newest trend for 2024 is the rise of the micro-grid. As smart technology becomes more commonly integrated into modern homes, homeowners are looking to create an energy-independent system for their home in case of power outages. In scale, this can range from homeowners looking to invest in quality, short-term emergency generators, to tech fans in sunny California looking to have their very own, solar-powered energy system.
Of course, smart-home technology itself is also expected to change dramatically in 2024, but even for those with previous smart-home innovations like Google Nest and electronic shower systems, a micro-grid can be very appealing.
